Starting today, the period of Sohr Shraddha, also known as Pitru Paksha, begins. According to Hindu tradition, the sixteen days from Bhadra Shukla Purnima until Ashwin Krishna Amavasya are observed as Pitru Paksha, also called Mahalaya Paksha. During this sacred time, rituals such as Shraddha, Tarpana, and Pindadana are performed to express reverence, respect, and gratitude toward one’s departed ancestors.

The Hindu scriptures state: “Pitru Deva Sama” — meaning the ancestors are equal to the gods. Through the performance of Shraddha, descendants satisfy their ancestors and in return, receive their blessings.

Importance of Shraddha

  • Performing Shraddha is considered a sacred duty for the liberation (moksha) of one’s ancestors.

  • It is believed that peace, good health, prosperity, and harmony in the family are attained through the grace of the ancestors.

  • Offering Tarpana and Pindadana reminds descendants of their roots, fostering a sense of gratitude and responsibility in life.

Ritual Method

On the day of Shraddha, one should bathe early in the morning, purify oneself, and then perform Tarpana and Pindadana. It is customary to offer meals, clothes, and donations (dakshina) to Brahmins, nephews, or grandsons. By doing so, it is believed that the ancestors are pleased and grant blessings.

Conclusion

Sohr Shraddha is not merely a religious observance but a profound cultural and spiritual tradition. Remembering and honoring the ancestors through this ritual instills values of duty, gratitude, and righteousness in life. Astu.
